Speech Therapy

Speech-language pathology services are essential to assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, fluency, and other related disorders.

Dee works with children with limited speech intelligibility and those who cannot produce certain speech sounds clearly; children with problems understanding and producing language; and those with cognitive communication impairments, such as attention difficulty, or memory and problem solving disorders.  She provides individualized assessments and treatment plans based on each child's specific needs. Areas assessed and treated include, but are not limited to:

Pre-Language Skills: This refers to eye contact, gestural communication, facial expression, babbling/sound imitation and other nonverbal communication methods that emerge before verbal communication.

Articulation and Phonology: This refers to the way each speech sound is produced in isolation, words, sentences, and conversation.

Motor Speech Therapy for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS): Children with CAS exhibit significant challenges with the planning and programming of the muscle movements for speech, even though they have sufficient muscle strength to produce speech sounds. Specialized treatment programs that support children's ability to sequence speech movements are effective for many children with CAS.

Language: Language is broken down into two components; Receptive and Expressive. Receptive language refers to the child's understanding of what is said to him/her. Expressive language refers to the words and gestures that a child uses to communicate.

Auditory Processing: Children with auditory processing disorder or language processing processing disorder have difficulty processing incoming auditory information, particularly speech. They may have difficulty when attempting to listen in a noisy environment, when the incoming information is presented too quickly or when too much information is given at once.

Pragmatic Language: This refers to social language. Children who have difficulty with pragmatics may exhibit inappropriate behavior or inappropriate responses to others' questions or directions. They may have difficulty taking turns, making eye contact, playing well with others, or following requests.

Cognitive Communication: Cognition covers thinking skills such as memory, organization, planning, and problem solving. These areas directly impact a child's classroom performance and social interactions.

Alternate Communication: For children with little or no speech capability, Dee can work with the child and family to select augmentative or alternative communication methods, including automated devices, sign language, and picture boards or books and teach their use.
